Katrina Nelson

My name is Katrina. I'm a Physiotherapist seeking to provide in-home treatments to older adults in the city. I work full-time for Alberta Health Services in Acute Care. I also have experience in private practice as well as working for patients with spinal cord injury, stroke, MS, and ALS. 

In the hospital, I work primarily with patients who have just had surgeries, for example, to repair fractures or who have elective surgery such as knee & hip replacements. Physiotherapists work with patients to support them in their rehab goals and we advise the medical team on recommendations and timelines. Patients can be discharged home fairly quickly after their hospitalizations and now their AHS covered Physiotherapy visits have been reduced meaning patients may not get all the sessions they need to make a full, well-guided recovery. 

I believe there is a large gap in the system for our patients who do return home after their hospitalizations. Unfortunately, AHS Physiotherapy Home Care cannot fill all the gaps. Further, there is a lack of hospital-trained Physiotherapists doing home visits who understand the needs of these patients. I believe I can fill the need slowly to see our older population at home to provide holistic Physiotherapy services, supervised home programs, and recommendations, and help them connect to resources. As you know, I operate with heart and I give my patients the time they need.
